Dear researchers!

EURAXESS Estonia team is glad to invite all international researchers working at Estonian R&D institutions together with their families to our traditional networking event on 14-15 September 2019! We will visit Setomaa – an area in southern Estonia, rich of its own unique culture that differs a lot from other areas in Estonia.

NB! We are sorry to let you know that the group is full before the deadline, so the registration is closed!

About the Agenda

EURAXESS Estonia traditional two-day field trips have a nice tradition of combining networking with learning about Estonian culture and society, contributing also with a few hours of voluntary communal work. This year we will go to Setomaa, an area where locals have kept close ties to their traditional roots throughout the history, and boast their own unique lifestyle including their own language and clothing customs. During the trip we will visit several villages of Setomaa, museums and a gallery, have a chance to listen to Seto leelo (on UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage) – a polyphonic singing tradition that is kept alive by both older and younger generations. The culture of Setos living in an area covering South East Estonia and a small part of North West Russia is often viewed as existing on the border of two worlds. We will have a chance to contribute to preserving of this unique culture by giving our helping hand to Värska Farm Museum.

On Saturday, after the lunch on arrival to the area, we will first visit the Värska Farm Museum where, after a guided tour, we will have a chance to help the museum with a few hours of work, be it either by building a roof or preparation works for a new garden. The museum would really appreciate our contribution to fulfill their goals in preserving and presenting this heritage. After the work and a small snack we will drive to Kolossova village and Vana Jüri Seebikoda – soap workshop (recommended to bring some cash with you). The road will pass through the “Saatse boot” – a 800 m section of Russian territory (no visa required!). From there we will drive to our accommodation in Setomaa Turismitalo, where we will have dinner, followed by cultural event and networking activities.

We will start the second day with a small seminar about recent developments in EURAXESS network and a short discussion on what more could be there for you. After the seminar we will have a comprehensive guided tour in the area, consisting of visits to Obinitsa museum and tsässon (Orthodox chapel), as well as Seto atelier-gallery, where you can print your own bag; followed by Obinitsa church and cemetery. After the lunch in Taarka Tarõ we will start driving back home.

The agenda may be a subject to minor changes.
