• Project description

This is a study of fiscal policies in late Antiquity with special attention to the military.

The enormous military effort which the Roman Empire had to face as of the third century is an element which can help to explain the great monetary, fiscal, administrative and social phenomena which characterized the following centuries. There is still a lack of a study that can improve our knowledge of the main phenomena that characterized the fiscal policy of the emperors and, as a result, the lives of the citizens of the Empire, through the analysis of the costs of defense, of logic allocation of funds decided by the central power and the evolution of the military pay in its respective forms of payment in kind and in currencies. The project is based on two axes, that of expenditure and that of income. To study the former, it is necessary to use a complex and heterogeneous documentation of a papyrological and epigraphic nature. For the second axis, the study must be based mainly on legal literature. It will be a question of retracing the correspondences between the evolution of tax legislation and the transformation of military structures. The work will be supported by the study of historical and literary works.
